Items to Prepare as a Swim Parent:

  1. Sharpie: Write your swimmer’s events, heat, and lane number on their arm. Do not expect your child’s coach to track them down for their races. In the early years, it’s important to stay aware of the events happening in the pool and ensure your child is prepared. As they gain more experience, they’ll learn to get ready on their own.
  2. Snacks and Drinks: Bring snacks (for both you and your swimmer) and a cooler with plenty of water or sports drinks. While most swim meet venues have concession stands, it’s a good idea to bring your own. Granola bars, protein bars, and fruits like bananas are excellent choices.
  3. Meet Mobile App: This app is a valuable resource for swim parents, providing meet results, heat sheets, schedules, and more. The free version does not include meet results, so consider upgrading to the paid version if you become a long-term swim parent. More details can be found here.
  4. Spare Equipment: Always bring a spare swim cap, goggles, and even a swimsuit. Unfortunate mishaps can happen, so having backups is essential.
  5. Positive Attitude and Encouragement: Remember, your child may be more nervous than you. Offer plenty of support and encouragement as they get ready to race, especially if it’s their first meet.
